A Wide Range Of Mid Century Modern Lighting

Posted:
In the middle years of the 20th century, new materials and new design aesthetics spurred furniture designers to create a new world of home and office furnishings. The same impulses led to a revolution in lighting design as well. Plastics and chrome were added to the repertoire of lighting materials. Simplicity of lines and functionality became a hallmark of some lighting designs, while exotic forms, textures, and colors were emphasized by other lighting designers.

When placed in a room with Mid Century Modern Furniture, modern lighting and accessories can add the finishing touch to the room’s design. Retro lighting can also be used in traditional settings to complement the room’s design, or to make a bold aesthetic statement.

Some of the best known designs for mid century lighting have been created by people who also made significant contributions to furniture design in the 20th century. Prominent among these individuals are George Nelson, Verner Panton, and Paul Evans. Other designers who created important examples of lighting in the last half of the 20th century, specialized in lighting. Included in this group are Poul Henningsen, Ingo Maurer, and Robert Sonneman.

Robsjohn- Gibbings: Modern Classical Furniture

Posted:
T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings was born in 1905 in England where he studied architecture and became interested in the furniture of the ancient Greeks. Moving to New York in 1936, Robsjohn-Gibbings opened a showroom on Madison Avenue, which featured furniture based on his interpretations of ancient Greek designs. The clean lines of his furniture and the spareness of his interiors, soon made him one of the United States’ leading interior decorators. In the 1930’s and 1940’s he designed homes for many of the United States’ leading social figures.

Robsjohn-Gibbings reputation was enhanced through his extensive writings on design. He was not impressed by the Bauhaus movement. He was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, elements of whose design found their way into Robsjohn-Gibbings work. He championed an Art Deco aesthetic but added a classical twist. He was the most important progenitor of what has come to be known as Hollywood Regency.

Robsjohn-Gibbings was principally associated with the Widdicomb Furniture Company for whom he designed in the late 1940’s and 1950’s. His furniture and accessories are eagerly collected today.

A good place to find vintage T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings furniture is at www.metroretrofurniture.com. Metro Retro has an inventory of over 3500 items of 20th century design. Included in Metro Retro collection are a Robsjohn-Gibbings dining suite, lounge with ottoman, chests, and side tables. Harry Bertoia’s Sculptural Furniture

Posted:
If you ever wondered who created the highly stylish Diamond chair--it was Harry Bertoia. Born in Italy in 1915, he moved to the United States as a teenager. He began his professional life as a jewellery designer, but soon joined Charles and Ray Eames in California experimenting with furniture for the innovative Evans Product Company. In 1950 Harry Bertoia moved east to work with Hans and Florence Knoll.

It was in 1952 that he designed the pieces of furniture that secured his international reputation. In addition to the Diamond chair, there was the Bird chair, side chairs, barstools, and a bench. The designs of Harry Bertoia reflect his background as a metal worker and are made of welded rods and wire. The common design elements in Harry Bertoia’s furniture are the sculptural quality of the pieces and their airiness. Knoll has been producing his furniture designs continuously since they were first introduced. He was so successful that from 1957 on, Bertoia used the royalties from his furniture design to devote himself exclusively to the making of metal sculptures, which are highly valued today

The furniture of Harry Bertoia has a light, even delicate, appearance, yet it is sturdy and durable. The sculptural lines of Harry Bertoia furniture continue their appeal today as people flock to mid century modern stores and online sites that offer vintage Harry Bertoia furniture.

You can find a wide range of vintage Harry Bertoia Furniture by visiting the website: www.metroretrofurniture.com. Metro Retro offers authentic Harry Bertoia furniture by Knoll including Diamond chairs with pads or without, side chairs with pads or without, Bird chairs and more.
